Have you ever seen The Wizard of Oz? If you’re familiar with the famous story, the witches Elphaba and Glinda were arch rivals in a constant battle between good and evil. The Wicked provides a great backstory on how this rivalry came to light. The exhilarating musical tells exactly what went on between Elphaba and Glinda and why the two witches. During their youth, these two talented witches went to the same school called the Shiz University. Elphaba was abandoned by her father due to her green skin, while Glinda is beyond loved and is blonde and beautiful. These two polar opposite ladies ended up as roommates at the university. At first, Elphaba and Glinda couldn’t get along, but later, circumstances helped them develop a beautiful friendship. There are many things in their world that challenge this friendship, such as different political views and liking the same boy. Will their friendship last long, or will they become the two enemies we know now from Wizard of Oz?

Wicked recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. The musical premiered on Broadway, New York, in 2003. The production features music and lyrics by Grammy and Tony Award-winning compers Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman. The storyline was loosely adapted from Gregory Maguiare’s Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The original Broadway production also featured incredible talents of the original cast, such as Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda. Meanwhile, multi-award-winning singer, dancer, and director Joel Grey joined the cast to play The Wizard. The creative team also included acclaimed director Joe Mantello and choreographer Wayne Cilento.

After a highly successful run in New York in 2003, the musical then moved on to a U.S. tour, followed by multiple international tours. The musical’s incredible production and storyline, as well as outstanding performances from the cast, have earned numerous accolades, including three Drama Desk Awards, an Outer Critics Circle Award, and a Drama League Award. Since its premiere in New York, the musical has earned over $1 billion in revenue from its Broadway run alone. The production has also traveled to 13 countries, including cities in Asia, Australia, the UK, and more. Since the spring of 2023, Wicked was recorded as Broadway’s fourth longest-running musical – surpassing Cats.

Aside from its great storyline, the musical features several incredible songs, such as “Defying Gravity,” “No One Mourns the Wicked,” “For Good,” and “Popular.” These numbers gained immense popularity in the mainstream scene, so much so that the original cast album of Wicked earned a Grammy Award.

Aside from incredible awards, the musical also received countless rave reviews from professional Broadway critics.

The most complete and completely satisfying musical I’ve come across in a long time – is USA Today.

What a spectacle this is! Keep your eye on the witches!” – Newsday.

“Sit back, relax, and trust the process. It still defies gravity!” – The Guardian.

David Cote from TimeOut New York praised the musical for being “lavishly designed.” He also goes on to add that Wicked “addresses complex themes, such as standards of beauty, individual morality and, believe it or not, opposing fascism. Thanks to Winnie Holzman’s witty book and composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz’s robust and pop-inflected score, Wicked soars.” Meanwhile, USA Today’s Elysa Gardner wrote, “Wicked offers a post-feminist, socially conscious reinterpretation of the story of Oz’s Wicked Witch of the West. Though that may sound like a recipe for pretentious pedantry, writer Winnie Holzman, whose TV credits include Thirtysomething and My So-Called Life, provides a libretto that juggles winning irreverence with thoughtfulness and heart.”
