Breathing new life into one of the breathtaking classical works of all time, the brand new comedy musical, & Juliet, is coming to the theater stage on Thursday 1st May 2025 and performing at Thelma Gaylord PAT At Civic Center Music Hall of Oklahoma City.
From the perspective of the principal female protagonist of Shakespeare's iconic tragedy, ‘& Juliet’ takes the classic in a new light wherein Juliet chooses not to kill herself after she loses the love of her life and her subsequent discovery of the real meaning of life throughout her traverse all over Paris. In her journey, our main lead encounters both old friends and brand new acquaintances that were made for more modern audiences. Using a very modern viewpoint, the post-modern play revitalizes the late tragedy and appeals to today’s generation of theatergoers.

Set side by side with the former known story of Shakespeare's creation which debuted live on stage roughly forty decades prior, critics have noted the many modifications that had been applied to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly newer musical based on the same leading lady. Shakespeare’s original premise is centered around the tragic events that takes place because of rash decision-making and the uncontrolled passion of two lovers, which results in the deaths of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragedy and instead pursues a more positive outlook by embracing on the limitless possibilities of life, even after such tragic experiences.
This messaging is evident in the new productionl’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her group of friends, who head to Paris to discover their identities not just as individuals, but as strong women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist interpretation through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes hold of her husband’s account and alters the ending of his well-known classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a rare moment to shine, while introducing new and equally empowered women to the story. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the show is able to incorporate contemporary culture, specifically songs from recent years, that encapsulate the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the ladies throughout the musical. Even the costumes worn by the production’s cast give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while showing the contrast between the new production and the previous classic by contrasting Elizabethan fashion and iconography with today’s attire styles. Each aspect of the musical was carefully thought-out to illustrate empowerment and "being able to write your own story".
