Legendary Romantic composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky composed the marvelous two-act ballet 'The Nutcracker' based on Alexandre Dumas' 1844 short story 'The Tale of a Nutcracker' and with jaw-dropping choreography by Marius Petipa, it became one of the world's best, most popular and most celebrated classical ballets in history.
Featuring some of the world's most well-known tunes in classical libary, 'The Nutcracker' tells the tale of young Clara who is gifted a rather peculiar wooden Nutcracker doll from the mysterious Drosselmeyer on Christmas Eve. After everyone has gone to bed and much to Clara's delight, the living room transforms into a wonderland where the toys come to life, with whom she embarks on an exciting adventure.
Apart from this wondrous story, 'The Nutcracker' features magnificent skills - from jaw-dropping lifts and mindblowing leaps to mega spins and phenomenal, elegant dancing, from tasteful choreography and astonishing puppetry to gorgeous hand-crafted costumes and scenery and of course, Tchaikovsky's extraordinary score to underline the stagecraft.
'The Nutcracker' is a festive must-see for the whole family and is a staple in ballet libary around the world. This year, Oklahoma City's resident professional ballet company, founded in 1972, presents Artistic Director Ryan Jolicoeur-Nye's exciting reimagining of the holiday classic, featuring over 195 handcrafted costumes, cinematic sets and whimsical twists including polar bears and a pirate ship battle with the Rat King and Queen.
